Artificial Intelligence chips are the new fad set in the world of computing. They are set to transform the world of computing, with their incredible processing speeds. Since AI is being used in almost all the areas like smartphones, self-riving vehicles, therefore AI chips have become so valuable now. There has been an exponential increase in the areas of conventional neural networks. There is a maximum of computations known as linear algebra computations, which is also called tensor math. Some of the input data is made into a vector and the vector is multiplied by the columns of a matrix of neural heights and the products of all these multiplications are known as ‘Multiply Accumulate Circuits’. During the past twenty years, AI big data and fast combination have become the norm and ML have brought about deep learning. Currently, there are many AI chip startups like Graphcore, Effinix, Flex Logix and Cornami, which are involved in the business of startups.Developments in the field of AI chips.
Till 2017, VC’s have tripled investments in AI chip startups and till 2019, it has reached approx 1 billion USD. Graphcore has received 200 million USD led by Microsoft and BMW, while others like Mythia Inc and Computing have raised millions in funding. Currently, many big firms like Qualcomm, Nvidia, and AMD have also entered this line.
Why the sudden interest in the field of AI chips?
AI software used to run on graphical chips. These chips have a very high capacity for parallel processing and a much larger capacity than CPU’s. But more people are stating that microchips designed for deep learning can be much more powerful. A new AI chip Eyeriss, which leads to large computing and 10–10000 times higher efficiency. The chip is flexible to be used for adapted applications. It is based on field programmable gate arrays ( FPGA ) and application-specific integrated circuits ( ASIC ) and optimized for use. The new chips make high performance computing tasks like predictive analysis and query processing very fast. These chips are equipped with a large amount of data like text, images, and language. Neural networks are compressed up to 10 % of their original size and no increase in the error rate.
Currently, China is investing tons of money in the field of AI computer chips. Alibaba has announced that a new AI inference chip known as Ali-NPU in 2019. It is to be used in smart cities, logistics and self driving vehicles.
In the field of self-driving cars, Tesla has announced that its chips will be installed and will be backward compatible. The new chip will be used to process 2000 camera images per second.Which are the top AI chip manufacturers?
The top AI chip makers in the market are listed below.
1) AWS Inferentia.
Inferential is a new chip designed by Amazon, which is used to deal with a large amount of data with lower latency. It is fully capable of handling power workloads, which is delivering thousands of teraflops per Amazon EC2 instance for multiple frameworks. It supports various kinds of data types, like INT-8, FP- 16 and bfloat16. Another of the popular frameworks which it supports is Pytorch, TensorNetetc.
2) Intel’s Myriad 2 AI Chip
These chips are designed by Movidius, an Intel company and they are to be used for AI, vision and imaging applications. This chip is run by a pair of twin LEON4 controllers. The Myriad 2 family of processors are changing the capabilities of devices and giving world class performance.
3)Huawei’s Ascend 910 and Ascend 310.
Huawei has inaugurated two latest AI chips, Ascend 910 and Ascend 310. These chips are one of the fastest in the market and help in training networks, in very less time. Ascend 910 is used for datacentres and Ascend 310 is applicable for smartwatches and smartphones.
4) IBM’s 8-bit Analog Chip.
IBM has recently released a new 8-bit Analog chip, which has precision for its digital and analog calculations. This chip is used for testing neural net, which sees numerals with 100 percent efficiency. Since data goes between memory and processing, which takes up time and energy. This AI chip is based on phase change memory. This technique uses in-memory computing which doubles the accuracy and uses 33 times less energy. It is suited for a low power environment.
5) Google TPU.
Google has introduced one more chip, Tensor Processing Unit. The upgraded TPU goes into AI to carry the high workload. The original TPU was meant for the interference stage of deep learning, whereas the new version can handle training also. The company says that it takes one day to train machine translations system using 32 of the best available GPU’s and the workload takes six hours at the top of eight connected TPU’s. Google is currently operating this machine inside its datacentres.
6) Power VR GPU’s and AI chips by imagination.
Imagination technologies declared three new PowerVR GPU’s (Graphics Processing Units ), which are directed for various product categories like neural networks for AI markets. It has a performance range of 0.6 to 10 tera opens / second. Multi score scaling up beyond 160 TOPS. These chips play a crucial role in bringing new capabilities in smartphones, smart cars, loT devices, and cameras.
7) AMD GPU Radeon Instinct MI60.
AMD gave the world’s first 7nm GPU with the name Radeon Instinct MI60. The company believes that GPU will power the next set of deep learning and AI applications high Performance Computing, graphical rendering and cloud computing applications. The chips are used for fast floating-point computing. This is used for GPU to CPU communication, which has increased. This is around 6 times faster. This is enabled by the AMD Infinity Fabric Link Technology. These chips are designed for high scale operations, where the 7mm technology by AMD is used to improve performance.What are the benefits of AI computer chips?

SK텔레콤은 25일 일산 킨텍스에서 열린 '한국판 뉴딜, 대한민국 인공지능을 만나다' 행사에서 자체 개발한 데이터센터용 AI 반도체 'SAPEON(사피온) X220'을 선보였다.
AI 반도체는 AI 서비스 구현에 필요한 대규모 연산을 초고속, 저전력으로 실행하는 데 특화된 비메모리 반도체로, AI의 핵심 두뇌에 해당한다.
2024년 50조원 규모로 성장이 예상되는 글로벌 AI 반도체 시장은 엔비디아, 인텔, 구글 등 글로벌 빅테크 기업이 주도하고 있다. 현재 대다수 기업은 그래픽처리장치(GPU)를 활용해 AI 데이터센터를 운영하고 있으나, 비싼 GPU 가격과 큰 전력 사용량 문제로 운영 비용에 부담이 적지 않은 상황이다.
사피온 X220은 데이터센터에 적용 시 기존 GPU보다 데이터 처리 용량이 1.5배 많지만, 가격은 절반 수준이고 전력 사용량도 80% 정도다.-

SKT는 25일 일산 킨텍스에서 열린 ‘한국판 뉴딜, 대한민국 인공지능을 만나다’에서 자체 개발한 데이터센터용 AI 반도체를 선보이고 국내 중소기업과 함께 대한민국의 ‘AI 1등 국가’ 실현에 앞장서겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.
◇AI 반도체 출시…GPU 대비 성능 우수하고 가격 저렴
이날 행사에서 SKT는 데이터센터에 즉시 적용이 가능한 AI 반도체 ‘SAPEON X220’을 공개했다. 이번 AI 반도체 출시를 통해 SKT는 엔비디아, 인텔, 구글 등 글로벌 빅테크 기업 중심의 미래 반도체 시장에 출사표를 던졌다.
글로벌 빅테크 기업이 AI 반도체 개발에 앞장서는 이유는 최근 AI 서비스가 생활과 산업 전반에 빠르게 확대되면서 처리해야 하는 데이터 양이 기하급수적으로 늘어나 AI 데이터센터의 성능 향상이 시급하기 때문이다.
현재 대다수 기업들은 GPU를 활용해 AI 데이터센터를 운영하고 있지만, 비싼 GPU가격과 큰 전력 사용량으로 인해 발생하는 높은 운영 비용에 부담을 느끼고 있어 AI 반도체에 대한 시장의 기대가 높다.
‘SAPEON X220’은 기존 GPU(그래픽처리장치) 대비 성능이 우수하고 가격이 저렴하다. ‘SAPEON X220’은 GPU 대비 딥러닝 연산 속도가 1.5배 빠르기 때문에 데이터센터에 적용 시 데이터 처리 용량이 1.5배 증가한다. 이에 반해 가격은 GPU의 절반 수준이고 전력 사용량도 80%에 불과하다.
‘SAPEON X220’은 다양한 분야의 데이터센터에 즉시 적용 가능하며, SKT는 국내외 다양한 사업자를 대상으로 AI 반도체 사업을 본격 추진할 계획이다.
SKT는 과기부 국책 과제 수행을 통해 'SAPEON X220'의 후속 반도체 개발도 진행 중이며, 2022년 양산에 돌입할 예정이다.-
